A handwoven rug transforms a room: it adds colour, warmth and character. Here is how to choose the right one.
1. The main types
- Tunisian mergoum: flat weave, geometric Berber patterns, bold colours. Very hard-wearing, perfect for a hallway or busy living room. See Tunisian rugs.
- Moroccan wool rug: thicker and soft underfoot, for a bedroom or reading corner. See Moroccan rugs.
- Turkish rug: classic patterns and arched prayer rugs, often thinner. See Turkish rugs.
- Egyptian rug: traditional patterns in soft colours. See Egyptian rugs.
2. The right size
- Living room: at least the front legs of the sofa and armchairs on the rug.
- Under a coffee table: the rug extends about 6 to 12 in past each side.
- Bedroom: the rug extends past each side of the bed, or a small rug on each side.
- Hallway: leave 3 to 4 in of floor visible on each side.
Tip: mark the size on the floor with painter's tape before ordering. Our sizes are in inches (width x length) on every product page.
3. Colours and patterns
In a room with plain walls and furniture, a colourful mergoum becomes the centrepiece. If the room already has many patterns, choose a softer rug. Repeat one of the rug's colours in a cushion or pouf to tie the room together.
4. Care
- Vacuum without a rotating brush once a week.
- Turn it around once or twice a year so it wears evenly.
- Stains: blot with a damp cloth, do not rub.
- Deep clean: take it to a rug cleaner.
Each rug is one of a kind: the one in the photo is the one you will receive. See all our rugs.
